The village faces east across False Bay, so the morning sun is the one to manage here: it comes in low and hard off the water, while the mountain directly behind the houses takes the afternoon sun off many of the lower cottages. That is why we tend to put the heavier shading on the seaward rooms and keep the west side light. The south-easter runs through the summer months, and the harbour cottages tucked under the mountain feel far less of it than homes out toward the Clovelly valley mouth — so any awning on an exposed side is wind-rated and fitted with an auto-retract sensor.
